Volunteer leadership in community organisations

Sustainable Communities held our Annual General Meeting on 20 June 2019 at The Joinery. We were pleased to welcome Christel Mex as our guest speaker, to give a presentation on her PhD research into leadership in Australian grassroots associations – that is not-for-profit organisations that are run by volunteers.

While undertaking her research, Christel surveyed and spoke with people involved in organisations in South Australia. She observed that volunteer involvement is declining and that there are significant challenges that voluntary groups face. She also identified steps that can be taken to revive and renew leadership.
