Let’s get active – we can’t go on waiting for someone else to do it

‘Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ones we’ve been waiting for. We are the change that we seek.’

This quote from Barack Obama was used by UnitingCare Wesley in preparing for the talk given by Jim Diers called Inspiring Communities this week. Twelve of us from Sustainable Communities went to the talk. His stories of communities taking their own action gave strong support for our goal in Sustainable Communities:  To build resilient communities of people acting to lower their ecological footprint.

The talk was directed at agencies and governments to emphasise the need for them to enable people to take action.

What does this mean for us? Let us build a relationship with local government especially that enables support for our actions.

We don’t have to wait for Councils to act on issues that we think are important.  We can work strongly in our Community Groups towards building resilient communities through many different local activities. We need imagination, good relationships, organising capacity, motivation and a commitment of time to make these things happen.
