People spaces instead of car spaces

Wondering around Adelaide today I saw some wonderfully inventive displays on ways in which to transform a car space into a people space. Seeing a small garden complete with chickens and deckchairs, or a outdoor work studio or a mini lounge room fitted into the space normally taken up by a single car really made me realise just how much room we dedicate to the automobile. I wonder what a city that dedicated its open spaces to people instead of cars would look like?
